How to Stop Lack of Productivity from Plaguing Your health

Time management is a necessary skill that one must acquire. Few of us are ever born that way, and learning to master it will help you stay on top of it all without feeling like you’re being run over and consumed by it.

The thing about lack of productivity is that if left untouched, it can make you feel even more overwhelmed. Instead of doing something about it, you might spend more time panicking when all you’ve really got to do is start planning to stop it from plaguing you.

Here’s how to get back on track:

1. Make a to-do list
The first step is listing out what needs to be done. You should make 2 drafts. The first should be everything that has to get done. The second draft should be prioritizing all those things. What needs to be done today? What needs to be done this week? Set timelines for completion and you’ll start feeling far more organized and in control.
2. Set goals
Goal-setting is so important because we need to have something to strive toward. Whether it’s for your career, weight loss, or something else, you should have a plan in mind. Don’t just look at the long-term, but the short term steps it will take to get there. You’ll find you feel you’re making progress when you set them in motion.
3. Stop distractions
One of the biggest distractions for everyone no matter what job they have are emails and messages. Knowing how to manage those is key to freeing up your time. Set some time  side each morning and afternoon — and set a limit for how long you’ll spend responding. Instead of answering messages all morning as they come in, focus on them from 9 am to 9:30 am for example. Then, get back on track and respond again later. You’ll find things run more efficiently this way.
4. Quit putting it off
Procrastination is a vicious cycle. We put things off, then we feel we’re lacking in productivity and we wind up putting them off for longer. Instead of letting something overwhelm you at the prospect of doing it, tell yourself you’re going to chip away at it for 10 minutes at a time. Break it down into manageable chunks, and you’ll find that  whatever you’re dreading – compiling that big report or even just putting away your laundry – gets done faster.
5. Take real breaks
It’s never a good idea to work yourself so much that you don’t have a moment to yourself. You can’t be at your best when you’re overdoing it. When it’s time for lunch, take an actual break. Eat in the cafeteria or break room. Go sit outside at a picnic table. Just take that time for yourself and let your mind breathe, instead of spinning its wheels all day long. Throughout the day, take short brisk walks around the building to get your blood flowing. You’ll find it not only stretches your legs but also stretches your mind.

By taking on these 5 tips, you’ll begin to feel more productive in all areas of life. What do you tend to procrastinate on the most?

For me, I struggle time management… thinking if I can’t get something done and  completed in the allotted time (I have given not anyone else) then it is not worth starting… I set unrealistic expectations for myself all the time.

Truth About MY Transformation

Here is the truth about my transformation – piece by piece… and total honesty!

On the way to the Hospital
This picture was taken while I was on the phone with my mom telling her that we were no our way to the hospital – actually we were on our way to the food court at the mall because I knew I was not going to get anything but ice chips for a while and that was just not going to give me the energy to push… So I had a Cheese Steak and fries… and it was GLORIOUS! I didn’t even feel bad about it, even when I expelled it later right before I was operated on… #noregrets!

Feeling happy
I was the heaviest I had ever been… but HELLO! I had a little girl in my belly that was growing! Even at two weeks early she was still over 7 lbs! I can tell you that I ENJOYED my pregnancy! I ate what I wanted, when I wanted… which to be honest consisted of Whataburger cheese burgers and small Dairy Queen Heath Bar Blizzards (there was one that had just opened on the way home… it was dangerous). In this picture I believe I was 185… I think – I don’t remember exactly – and to be honest… I still don’t care! I did make fun of myself that I weighed the same as my husband and I am only 5 feet tall…

3 Months PP
This was January 1 2017. Still swollen – but slowly getting down… I was back to work full time, my mom was able to watch my sweet baby during the day – and I was well on my way to getting back into shape. (Notice I said nothing about my “body back” or anything of that nature… This was the time that I also decided that I was going to start my Personal Training Certification – here is the kicker – I had a 3 month old… maybe not the smartest decision I have made – but there I was – FULL STEAM AHEAD!

6 Months PP
Here I am feeling a little discouraged. Not feeling like the progress I was making was showing. Self doubt was creeping in. I took a week or two off. Gave myself a mental break from the work out schedule I had created for myself. With being a new mom, working full time, and studying to be a NASM CPT – my time was stretched so thin!

Lost track of timing
I did not let myself stay in a funk for long. I did get back to it. Reorganized my “life” schedule so that I could make the most of my awake hours and get as much as I could accomplished. The more I was able to accomplish – the more I felt like myself again. Cleaning House, getting a load of laundry done (washed, dried, and folded/hung-up), finishing a chapter in my study, fixing a homemade dinner – all were accomplishments!

Feeling stonger
I learned to be nice to myself. Life is not about being rigid with a routine. Sure routines help me and routines are nice to have – but I stopped beating myself up. I stopped worrying about if things didn’t get done according to my schedule. If I was not a size I thought I should be by now. I started enjoying the process.

Fit
This is me now. I am over 2 years past giving birth – and how did I do it?

  • No pills
  • No wraps
  • No teas
  • No “special supplements”
  • No dieting – I literally have eaten what I want… but I regulate my portions
  • No frozen or prepackaged “lean meals”
  • No rigid workouts
  • No counting calories
  • No weighing weekly… I literally MAYBE weighed myself once a month…
  • No gimmicks WHATSOEVER!

Here is the deal – if you want something to stick – you have to make a lifestyle out of it. You have to make a choice to make SOME changes… and not to change it all at once. You have to learn to live life in a healthy way – not a RESTRICTIVE WAY!

I wrote all my own workouts – I ate intuitively (that is more for another post) – I LIVED LIFE! I enjoyed cake, drinks with friends, chips and queso… I learned how to buy groceries and make food that tasted great and was healthy too! I CHANGED MY MINDSET – and it does not happen overnight, it is a slow process… but WHO SAID YOU HAVE TO DO IT ACCORDING TO ANYONE ELSE’S TIME LINE? (Unless your doctor is advising you – that is a different story – always listen to your doctor or get a second opinion etc.)

Bottom line – I learned how to be HAPPY… I found my HAPPY place…

Good Grief

Is grief a good thing?

Yesterday (January 7, 2019) I had to let go of my dog Rosco. It was unexpected, very confusing, and very tragic.

To many people (who are obviously not pet people) pets are just pets… they have expiration dates and they can move on and move along… but for others such as myself – there is such a huge void in my heart… I am blessed to have one more dog in the house – if we didn’t have Freddie – I am not sure I would be able to compose myself today.

You see – Rosco has been there for our family through it ALL! He showed up on our doorstep (thanks to my brother, who had already called and asked me if I wanted the puppy and I said no – and showed up KNOWING that I could not resist those floppy ears and sweet personality) and was immediately family. He was so love and so sweet!

He was there through some really rough patches for us – our two losses, our financial struggles, our successes, our move, our baby girl, finding Freddie, the loss of his sister Lilly – and so much more… Everyday – a loving, floppy velvety eared, would play fetch until his legs fell off his body, scared of the dark – boy. We thought we would be able to see him get a lot more grey and a lot older before we had to let him go.

Grief hurts – but there is a silver lining. When you grieve – it lets you know you had the opportunity to love fiercely. I cried so hard my legs gave out and Paul held me up… He was so strong knowing that part of my world was collapsing… but I knew he was loved – he was snuggled – he was and is cherished.

Loss is loss. Grief is grief. Am I healed – no that will take time. But I am honored I was able to be his human. Grief is good… grief means you loved. Grief comes in many different ways for many different people and each person processes differently. While I am currently going through a stage of grief – JOY comes in the morning… I am able to smile – because he brought me so much love and joy – and while I miss him terribly – and will always… his memory lives on!

Today is a struggle – but I will choose to love – for the greatest gift of all is LOVE.

But Why…

I am not at this stage in parenthood yet, but my day is coming I assure you…

“But why??”

This small question from a toddler has peaked my interest in the reason for people making a certain decision…

A few posts back I spoke about what got me back into my journey of health and fitness several years ago.  You can read it here if you want to take a look – but it got me thinking about the reason behind people’s decisions…

Every decision you make has a why to it. Whether you do something or choose not to do something there is a why.

So what is your why?

Why do you want to lose those last 10 pounds?

Why are you having a hard time getting started?

Why are you unable to put your health as a priority?

Once you have answered those questions – ask yourself this final thing…

Why are you letting something hold you back?

I am not saying once you have the answers, BOOM, magic is going to happen – but what I am saying is that once you have the honest talk with yourself about why it is you make the decisions you make – you may be able to make some changes and see some results.

Distractions Happen…

There are easy days and there are hard days. Most days she sleeps through the night with no problems… but these dang teeth – they are the worst!

Soon this little one will be grown and not need me… but today she does, even though it may not look like it at times.

She woke up and was tired of being tired before I was done with my workout… so I put the “portable AC” on her in the garage and finished my workout… but my focus was mostly on her… but I did complete the workout!

When I finished my workout – my day wasn’t “done”. I have a 8-5 job that I work, plus Life Stride Fitness. I understand the busy working moms out there… I also do understand (somewhat) the stay at home moms and how that is very much a job too…

Sometimes you just have to do what you do to make things work and the day move along. Sometimes you have to maneuver around some distractions and obstacles. Sure my workout could have been better had I been able to focus 100% on it – but there are many times when other things fill our minds and while we would like to focus 100% on the workout and training and nutrition and healthy lifestyle – there will be distractions.

And that is O.K.! Do the best you can and tomorrow is a new day!

Motivation – Even on a Monday

Staying Motivated

It’s Monday morning.

The alarm goes off and I have two choices:

Hit snooze and enjoy about an hour and a half more sleep before I HAVE to get up and get my daughter ready for summer camp and myself ready for work…

-OR-

Get up put my feet on the floor – make it out to my garage gym (which mind you it is summer in Texas and even at 3:45 AM it is still unbelievably humid outside) and get a good sweat before having to start my day…

I chose to get up this morning. I chose to get my day started on a healthy note. I chose to take my health into my own hands. I chose to make myself a priority – so that I can take time to focus on my family.

Now sure there are several “reasons” (but lets be honest they are really excuses most of the time*) – My daughter has a fever from teething and is having a rough time, I plan on getting up the rest of the week to work out, and I could always work out this evening…

But I choose to get up – because when I don’t my day is off. My day is not as focused. I do not feel as driven to get my goals done – and the most important factor – if I have to work out in the evenings – I take away valuable time from my family and friends because I chose to sleep in. It is all about how I want to spend my time.

I keep in mind what I want to do and what I want to get done.

The motivation is not always there… that is where dedication comes up to the plate… it tells me that there are goals that I have that I want to meet. Even if I am dreading what is out in the garage waiting for me – I get up and get it done – and I never regret getting up! I feel accomplished when I am finished and I can say “I did that – the hard thing… I did it”.

Here are the easy was that I prepare and get ready to get my mornings started (even when the alarm goes off at 3:45 AM)

  1. Have my pre-workout and my BCAA’s already mixed and in my outside fridge.
  2. Many times I will sleep in my workout clothes – I am going to shower after I workout anyways so for me it works… besides I save money by not buying pajamas…
  3. I have my clothes laid out for work (that is right I have a 8-5 job as well as being my own boss)

These are just some of the things I do to make sure that I am able to hit the ground in the morning ready to make it a great day!
